Baseball players who have died tragically by gunshots

After David Ortiz  aka Big Papi’s incident, we need to revisit history and remember a  group of baseball players that died tragically by gunshots.  Members of a sad club of individuals that weren’t as lucky as Big Papi.

 

Bithorn

Hiram Bithorn

Bithorn was the first Puerto Rican player to play Major League Baseball in 1942 as a member of the Chicago Cubs.

In 4 seasons with the Cubs he won 34 -31 record with an ERA of 3.16. In 1943 he led the league in shutouts with seven.

At age 35, Bithorn tried to make a comeback in the Mexican Pacific League. He was shot by police officer Ambrosio Castillo Cano in Tamaulipas, Mexico. Bithorn died the next day on December 29, 1951 in Ciudad Victoria’s hospital. Castillo Cano was sentenced to eight years in prison for Bithorn’s murder.

Miguel Fuentes

Miguel was a promising right-handed pitcher from Puerto Rico. Debut it in Majors  as a member of the Seattle Pilots in September of 1969. In his first game against the New York Yankees, struck out two batters during one inning pitched.

He was shot January 29, 1970 in a bar in Puerto Rico.  His assassin was never apprehended.

 

Luke Easter

Luke was a baseball hitter that saw action in the Negro Leagues with the Grays, in Puerto Rico he saw action with Mayaguez and in the Majors with the Indians.  He was known for his prodigious power.

After his days as a coach, Easter went to work for the Aircraft Workers Alliance in 1964, eventually becoming the chief union steward for TRW in the east-side suburb of Euclid, Ohio. On March 29, 1979, he was shot and killed outside a bank. Easter was approached by two robbers armed with shotguns, and after refusing to turn over the funds, he was shot twice at close range.

Ivan Calderón

Nicknamed «Ivan the Terrible,» was a Puerto Rican Major League Baseball player from 1984 to 1993. Played for Montreal, Boston, the White Sox, and Seattle.  He was named an All-Star in 1991.

On December 27, 2003, Calderón was shot multiple times in the back at point-blank range while at a bar in Puerto Rico. As of today, his murder remains unsolved.

 

Lyman Bostock

He batted left-handed and threw right-handed.  A career .311 hitter, Bostock played three seasons for the Minnesota Twins and one for the California Angels.

Bostock was shot and killed as a passenger in a vehicle in his hometown of Gary, Indiana on September 23, 1978, after playing against the White Sox earlier in the day. His shooter was sentenced to a psychiatric hospital and released after seven months.

Luis «Canena» Márquez

He was the only player to win batting titles in the Negro Leagues, the PCL and the Puerto Rican Winter Leagues. Marquez was the first black player ever signed by the Yankees organization.

Márquez was murdered March 1, 1988, in Puerto Rico by his daughter’s husband.

 

gus polidor

Gus Polidor

Gus Polidor was Venezuelan baseball player who played for the California Angels Milwaukee Brewers and Florida Marlins.

In his major league career, Polidor played for seven years in the majors. He batted .207, with 2 home runs, 35 runs batted in, 33 runs scored, 15 doubles and 3 stolen bases.

On April 28, 1995 he was murdered in Caracas in the middle of a carjacking attempt.
